Satellite Internet Connection – A Brief Introduction

As the names suggests, a satellite interconnection involves artificial satellites around the geostationary orbits around the earth to give internet access.  A dish antenna is used at the premises of the internet user which makes a link with the receiver at the satellite. The dish is usually wired with the user’s PC and hence a connection is developed between the user and the satellite in the space. The internet connection is established by establishing this connection first.

1. Latency
Latency is the time required to reach the signal (considering one way communication) from user’s dish antenna to the receiver at the satellite.  Smaller the latency greater would be the speed of the internet connection.

2. Rain Fade
Rain Fade is a factor which affects many wireless connections. I once used WiMax (Wireless internet) which sues the network like our cell phones use. But in case of WiMax the signals were operated at high frequency (in Ghz) and in this range the signals gets significantly weakened by rain and storms.

3. Line of Sight
The dish antenna at user’s end should have a line of sight connection with the satellite. It implies that there should be direct, straight signal link between the antenna and the satellite.

4. Fresnel Zone
The signal beam exiting from the user’s dish antenna towards the satellite does not maintain same width in its way. It gets broadened till it reaches the midpoint between the antenna and the satellite and starts getting narrowed again after that. The maximum range of signal width is called Fresnel Zone. These signals are highly sensitive to any blocking between its way. Even one leaf of tree can affect the signal strength. So the dish antenna should be placed under a clearer, wider sky.
